Translated from Gidrotekhnicheskoe Stroitel 'stvo, No. 12, December 2015, pp. 13 -23. Problems during filling of the reservoir under frozen rock bed conditions and rock-fill dam body are examined. Thawing of the dam bed and body resulted in an incline in the direction of the upper pool, which in turn caused local opening of the joint between the concrete dam and the asphalt-concrete water wall, which is the water-impermeable core of the dam.

The results are presented of the major activities undertaken by the Geodynamic Research Centre during the final stage of Boguchanskaya hydroproject construction.This article presents the progress made by the Geodynamic Research Centre at the Boguchanskaya hydroproject during the final stage of its construction (2006 -2012).As is known, after 1993, the tempo of construction work at the project slowed considerably owing to a lack of funding. The 12-year interruption in construction had an effect on the rocky soil in the dam bed. Therefore, when the decision was made, in 2006, to complete construction of the hydroproject, Institut Gidroproekt was faced with the need, as the general designer, to refine the engineering designs used in the project [1]. In this connection, Geodynamic Research Centre had to update information on the current state of the bed and the portion of the hydraulic engineering installations that had been constructed before the hiatus, as well as to update monitoring observations and carry out numerical calculations of the stress-strain state of the dam bed and its abutments.Considering the complexity and diversity of issues requiring immediate resolution, as well as the significance and great responsibility of the hydroproject under construction, the Centre used all of the forms of surveying and investigation at its disposal, including geodetic, geophysical, geomechanical, seismometric-engineering, seismological-engineering, and calculation methods.Individual results of Centre activities have been published [2 -8], but basically, they are contained in report materials that have been transmitted to the customer and are not available to the broad circle of interested specialists, i.e., hydraulic engineers and surveyors. Therefore, considering the unique nature of the Boguchanskaya hydroproject and the diverse nature of the problems that have arisen during construction, it seems expedient in set forth, in abridged form, the most significant and previously unpublished results of integrated multi-year surveys and investigations. 2 Investigation of Concrete Dam Bed Properties and ConditionOne of the key items concerning surveys at the Boguchanskaya hydroproject, from its very inception, has been determining the deformation and strength properties of the dolerites that underlie the concrete dam bed.As is known, design yield parameters were determined during the survey phase primarily from geophysical data [9], while no experimental determinations were made of shear parameters in the massif or along the "concrete -rock" interface. So, when the task arose of evaluating the current state of the dolerite massif after a long hiatus in dam construction (from 1993 to 2005), so as to be able to refine the design yield and strength characteristics for rock in the facility bed, in 2007 -2008 the Centre undertook integrated (geomagnetic, geophysical, and computational) investigations. The behavior of a dam during initial filling of its impounded reservoir, which can be characterized not only by the ascent of the water level, but also by warming of the bed of the dam and change in its physico-mechanical properties during filling of the reservoir as a result of its contact with the water, is analyzed. It is demonstrated in this period that it not so much the hydrostatic pressure of the water as the change in the temperature regime in the near-surface zone of the bed that has a major determining effect on deformation of the near-contact zone of the bed.When constructing water-development works in regions of permafrost propagation, it is necessary in the initial filling of the reservoir to consider the possibility of pronounced changes in the phsyico-mechanical characteristics of their rock beds. Serving as the basic factor for the heat transfer of positive temperatures into the rock bed of the dam, the water of the reservoir will, as a result of warming of the bed, contribute to its increased deformability, increase in porosity, and fissuring, and reduction in strength. Moreover, all this will occur over time in the process of warming, making it impossible to previously construct a geomechanical model for prediction of the behavior of the structure during initial filling of the reservoir.The first filling of the reservoir at the Boguchany HPP, when despite the increase in hydrostatic pressure on the body of the rock-fill dam, its displacements were recorded in the direction of the upper pool, and an increase in settlements was noted as the air temperature rose with the upper pool at an essentially constant level, may serve as one of the characteristic examples of such behavior [1].The rock-fill and concrete dams at the Boguchany HPP were constructed under complex natural-climatic conditions, which have exerted a considerable influence on the condition of the structural components of the dam. The maximum temperature differential at the damsite during initial filling of the reservoir was of the order of 50°C (from +20 to -30°C), just at that time when the temperature of the bed in the near-contact zone prior to start of filling of the reservoir fluctuated from +1 to +5°C.The first pronounced increase in the temperature of the bed of the dam was noted after the start of the initial filling of the reservoir on 16 April 2013 (Fig. 1); here, it was noted not immediately after the start of ascent of upper-pool level, but after approximately one month, during which warming of the near-contact zone of the bed of the concrete dam, which is comprised of a dense dolerite, was initiated. Temperatures of the bed were measured by PTS-60 string temperature transducers in holes. Figure 2 shows diagrams of the temperature rise in the bed of Section No. 14 of the concrete dam and the concurrent increase in its settlement.
