Behavior Change Interventions for Health Promotion in Physical Therapist Research and Practice: An Integrative Approach

Abstract: There is an increasing focus on health promotion in physical therapist research and practice. A clinical model (Health-Focused Physical Therapy Model) was developed for identifying major steps in the delivery of health promotion focusing on adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors. One of the primary steps within this model is the design and delivery of behavior change interventions. Such interventions involve coordinated sets of activities that target change in a specific pattern of unhealthy behavior (eg, phy… Show more

“…The COM-B model identifies Capability, Opportunity and Motivation factors as key influences of Behavior, 22 and this model might identify the correlates of exercise that can be leveraged for behaviour change in MS. 23,24 The COM-B model identifies the constructs (e.g. behavioural regulation, motivation and goal setting) that could be targeted by interventions for health behaviour change including exercise training in MS. 25 This is important as COM-B components can be aligned with the theoretical domains framework (TDF) through the behaviour change wheel. 22 The TDF framework gives a systematically There is broad recognition that behaviour change interventions, defined as a systematic or coordinated approach for teaching people skills, strategies and resources for behaviour change and sustainability over time, 22 should be guided by behaviour change theory.…”

“…The inclusion of follow-up periods is necessary to identify factors influencing sustainability over periods of 1 or more years on an individual and group level. Systematic application, evaluation and reporting of behaviour change techniques 25,31 will further improve refinement and tailoring of interventions. The application of learning from other populations may not be ideal given the specific MS symptoms and profile (e.g.…”
