Begonia ehuangzhangensis (sect. Diploclinium, Begoniaceae), a new species from Guangdong, China

Abstract: A new species, Begonia ehuangzhangensis, from Yangchun City, Guangdong Province, China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, B. ehuangzhangensis is most similar to B. fimbristipula in tuber shape, leaf number, and placentation type but significantly differs by indumentum characters of petiole and blade, tepal number of male flower, flower size, capsule size, and flowering period. Begonia ehuangzhangensis also resembles B. rongjiangensis in plant shape, number of tepals, placentation type, and floweri… Show more

“…China has over 210 accepted names of Begonia and its southwest region is one of the distribution centres of this genus. In the past two years, ten Begonia species were newly described (Chen et al 2018a(Chen et al , 2019Ding et al 2018;Li et al 2018Li et al , 2019He et al 2019;Tong et al 2019;Wang et al 2019a) and many more are likely awaiting discovery and description in China. At the same time, several newly-recorded Chinese Begonia species (Yang et al 2015;Wang et al 2019b) and synonyms (Shui and Chen 2017;Chen et al 2018b) have also recently been reported.…”

“…The specific epithet ‘ehuangzhangense’ is derived from the type locality, E’huangzhang Nature Reserve of the Guangdong Province, in China. This area is the oldest geological platform in the Guangdong Province, in which many endemic species occur ( Wang et al 2003 ; 2004 ; Ding et al 2018 ). The new species is also expected to occur in the Yunkaishan National Nature Reserve, Maoming City, because this area shares a similar tectonic history with E’huangzhang.…”

“…In the past, the numerous surveys on plant diversity of this province were widely conducted by a number of botanists mainly from several research institutions, including South China Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Academy of Forestry, South China Agricultural University, etc. However, some new species and new records still have been recently discovered (Huang et al, 2020;Zhou et al, 2020), including two begonia species (Ding et al, 2018;Tu et al, 2020)…”
