Beef cattle feeding costs as impacted by hay yield and quality

Abstract: Reducing dependence onstored feed, particularly dry hay, is a major factor in beef cattle production systems in the southeastern United States. Increasing the nutritive value of the hay that is fed, however, can ultimately reduce total feed costs and boost profitability. A field trial was conducted in east-central Mississippi evaluating several warm-season perennial grass hay crops under varying N and harvest regimes in order to assess their ability to meet beef cow nutritional demands and to estimate total fe… Show more

“…The unfertilized BG was similar in mean cumulative FM compared with the fertilized BGN treatment. The addition of N, especially in amounts ≤100 lb acre −1 yr −1 , may not always contribute to greater amounts of FM in seeded cultivars (Rushing et al., 2021). Greater cumulative forage harvested for BGA can be attributed to the contribution of alfalfa, during the spring months leading up to the onset of grazing (Figure 2).…”

“…In the case of BB and SG, these findings were also expected based on trends in plant maturity [61]. Additionally, Rushing et al [62] evaluated the costs of feeding with weaned beef steers as being impacted by the hay yield and quality of several warm-season perennial grasses, including EG. They found that more frequent harvests (30-day intervals) provided greater digestible fibers, similar to in early harvests in the current study.…”

“…TDN, which is often a function of plant maturity (Rushing et al., 2021), was affected by grazing ( p < 0.0001) and tillage ( p = 0.0238), resulting in a grazing × tillage interaction ( p = 0.015). No differences were observed between species ( p = 0.0665).…”
