Settled and Sacred Landscapes of Cyprus (SeSaLaC) is a systematic archaeological survey project of the University of Cyprus in the Xeros River valley in the Larnaka district in Cyprus. This article aims to present a first synthesis of the diachronic settlement pattern in the region. After a short introduction on the area and the SeSaLaC project, we attempt to identify and interpret settlement evolution and landscape changes in the region, from early prehistory to Late Antiquity. The contextualisation and evaluation of settlement changes in the Xeros River valley are carried out within a multi-layered framework along the main strands of approach presented in this Land special issue. The presentation and analysis that follows below is a work in progress.

The Late Bronze Age was a period of profound transformation on the island of Cyprus. Through investigations at the Maroni complex and at Kalavasos-Ayios Dhimitrios-two urban centers in south-central Cyprus-the Kalavasos and Maroni Built Environments (KAMBE) Project seeks to understand the relationship between these changes and the coeval rise of the island's first cities. Here we discuss the results of new work at Ayios Dhimitrios, where the collection of high-resolution data is providing new insights into the emergence and development of this Late Bronze Age urban landscape. Our work has focused on two areas: (1) a monumental court-centered building (Building XVI) with possible evidence for feasting and (2) the approach to the city's administrative core, which was monumentalized through a series of construction phases. We argue that cities are produced by the place-making activities of their inhabitants at various scales, and our investigations in these two areas of Ayios Dhimitrios provide compelling evidence for elite place making through which the urban environment shaped, and was shaped by, new patterns of movement, social interaction, and daily practice. Cyprus, the third largest Mediterranean island, is located at an exceptional crossroad in the eastern Mediterranean, where cultures from the Middle East, Africa and Europe have interacted for more than 10 000 years. The aim of this paper is to present an exhaustive review of the past archaeological geophysical surveys on the island. The result of our research indicates that to date, more than 30 archaeological sites spanning from the Pre‐Pottery Neolithic (ca. 10 000 BC) to the Venetian period (up to 1571 AD) have been investigated through noninvasive ground‐based techniques. The investigations concern the mapping of the extent of ancient occupation (settlements and cemeteries), the study of the internal organization of settlements (domestic architecture, palaces and fortifications), the investigation of funerary structures (tombs) and the use of space within buildings. The methods implemented are multiple and often used in combination. Emphasis has been given to ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic induction (EMI) and magnetic and electrical resistance techniques. Most surveys have been targeted towards the production of maps representing the spatial distribution of the subsurface architectural residues, and sometimes these have been accompanied by soundings, tomographies, as well as 3D reconstructions of the ancient structures. Very few sites have been subjected to the measurements of the chemical or magnetic properties of the soils in relation to the results of geophysical prospection. Further discussion concerns (i) the targets of the archaeo‐geophysical surveys in Cyprus, (ii) the limitations of the application of the specific techniques in relation to the Cypriot archaeological and geological context, (iii) the geophysical signatures of archaeological remains and (iv) the metadata accompanying the geophysical results.
