Supporting Postdivorce Stepfathering: Directions for Family Counselors

“…While it has been found that children are not worse off in a stepfamily environment than a nuclear family (Saint-Jacques et al, 2016), the handling of the marital dissolution has important outcomes (Becher et al, 2019; Jensen & Weller, 2019; Shafer, Jensen, & Holmes, 2017) in terms of influencing whether the divorcing process is experienced as discrete (time-limited) or chronic (lifelong) stress. Ongoing connections with two parents or adults through and after the divorce seem predictive of the children’s more successful academical performance, more emotional stability, leadership aspirations, and protection from the negative effects of poverty (Andreasson & Johansson, 2019; Coleman et al, 2015). Conversely, marital dissolution that deprives the children of the dual adult caregivers has been linked to lower psychological well-being, poorer self-concept, poorer social relationships, and diminished academic performances among the children (DeLongis & Zwicker, 2017), emphasizing the need for ongoing post-stepfamily dissolution contact with the now-absent stepparent.…”

“…In addition to acknowledging the benefits to the children, stepfathers are becoming more committed to remaining part of the lives of their ex-stepchildren. Challenging gender-divided notions of parenthood, where historically fathers lose touch with children in divorce, and custody decisions are a function of gender-idealized parenting with mothers perceived as more critical for children’s well-being, currently fathers (Andreasson & Johansson, 2019) are seeking more involvement in the everyday life of sharing and caring not only for children but of children learning about fathers as individuals and as men in addition to role of father. The shift from distant postdivorce fathering of 50 years ago with weekend visitation in which almost 50% of divorced fathers had no contact has changed to more ongoing father contact contributing to better life satisfaction for children.…”
