Beating Greedy for Stochastic Bipartite Matching

Abstract: We consider the maximum bipartite matching problem in stochastic settings, namely the query-commit and price-of-information models. In the query-commit model, an edge e independently exists with probability p e . We can query whether an edge exists or not, but if it does exist, then we have to take it into our solution. In the unweighted case, one can query edges in the order given by the classical online algorithm of Karp, Vazirani, and Vazirani [KVV90] to get a (1 − 1/e)-approximation. In contrast, the previ… Show more

“…To our knowledge, the only general online rounding method other than independent rounding is the online contention resolution schemes initiated by Feldman et al [17] and further developed by Adamczyk and W lodarczyk [1], Lee and Singla [24], and Dughmi [11,12]. It has found applications mainly in online problems with stochastic information, such as prophet inequality [14,17], posted pricing [17], stochastic probing [17], and stochastic matching [14,18,19].…”

“…Query-Commit. Motivated in part by the application of kidney exchange, there is a large body of literature studying a variant of stochastic matching known as the query-commit problem [1,7,9,14,17,21,40]. Here, edges have fixed realization probabilities and can be queried in sequence, with the constraint that successful edges queried must be accepted, and accepted edges must form a matching.…”
