Beasts of Battle

Abstract: The raven, the eagle, and the wolf occur in Old English poetry as harbingers of impending battle and death. The way the Anglo‐Saxon poets employ the appearance of these “beasts” suggests that they constitute a “theme,” that is, a motif or idea regularly employed by the poets.
