Beam Smoothing Based on Prism Pair for Multistep Pulse Compressor in PW Lasers

Abstract: Ultra-short, ultra-intense lasers provide unprecedented experimental tools and extreme physical conditions, enabling the exploration of the frontiers of basic physics. Recently, a multistep pulse compressor (MPC) method was proposed to overcome the limitations of the size and the damage threshold of gratings in the compressor for the realization of a higher-peak-power laser. In the MPC method, beam smoothing is an important process in the pre-compressor. In this study, beam smoothing based on prism pairs is in… Show more

“…It is obvious that the compressor, in which the beam passes a considerable distance, is also a fluence fluctuation filter, but the properties of this filter have not been studied before. Moreover, to smooth fluence fluctuations it was recently proposed to use a pair of prisms [ 23 ] and an asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC) [ 24 ] , as well as a compressor with one pair of gratings [ 25 , 26 ] , which is a particular case of the AFGC. Numerical simulations were carried out in Refs.…”

“…Although a prism pair with large apex angle can shorten the distance, the prism thickness will be increased, which is more expensive. Two perpendicular prism pairs can also shorten the distance [24]. Transmitting gratings may efficiently reduce the distance in the future.…”

“…Since the first grating has a relatively long nanosecond-pulse duration and has a high damage threshold, a relatively small spatial chirp is sufficient for protecting the first grating directly. In comparison to a spatial chirp line induced in one direction, the beam-smoothing effect is more effective when the spatial chirp induced in two directions [24]. To shield the compressor from all the random hotspots, one prism pair would be better located directly before the grating-based compressor.…”

“…Recently, it was proposed to use a pair of prisms to smooth fluence fluctuations [10], but in high-power lasers they require considerable space and significantly deteriorate beam quality. A more elegant solution was proposed in [11] (an asymmetric four-grating compressor (AFGC)) and in [12,13] (a compressor with one pair of gratings, which is a particular case of AFGC).…”
