Beam quality measure for vector beams

Abstract: Vector beams have found a myriad of applications, from laser materials processing to microscopy, and are now easily produced in the laboratory. They are usually differentiated from scalar beams by qualitative measures, for example, visual inspection of beam profiles after a rotating polarizer. Here we introduce a quantitative beam quality measure for vector beams and demonstrate it on cylindrical vector vortex beams. We show how a single measure can be defined for the vector quality, from 0 (purely scalar) to … Show more

“…If the beam incident on the system is already a vector beam, the spiral phase structures in the incoming beam cancel those phases embedded in the gratings, and the result is a delta function at a higher diffraction order where these phases cancel 33 . If the incoming vector beam is generated with another q -plate, the phenomena can be regarded as a subtraction of the generating and detecting q -plate 34 .…”

“…3(c), in the PWE eigen mode the chosen singular point is surrounded by an 'L-line' that maps into the equator on the polarization Poincaré sphere; in contrast, the surrounding polarization states in the VSHG case turn into an equator-centered "8-like" loop that is across two hemispheres. Such interesting azimuthal position squeezing will be the subject of future studies on optical parametric amplification systems with specialized theoretical and experimental tools [18,19].…”

“…Vector beams can be quantified and analyzed using a variety of approaches, including geometric phase measurement [37], shear interferometry [38], Bell violations [3,39,40], and quantum state tomographies via projective measurements [41]. Despite these advances, all previously suggested measures of non-separability assess only a predefined subspace of vector beams, the surface of a specific higher-order Poincaré sphere (HOPS) [42][43][44].…”

“…The formal analogy between non-separable vector beams and entangled quantum states allows the application of quantum concepts to classical light beams. Concurrence, a quantum measure of entanglement in two dimensions, has been identified as a good measure of the degree of non-separability of vector beams, a vector quality factor [40,41]. Here we will define the concurrence in terms of Stokes projections, providing a spatially resolved and basis-independent measure of entanglement.…”
