Beam loss study and its application to the Taiwan Light Source and Taiwan Photon Source

Abstract: The mechanism of beam loss and radiation hot spots at the Taiwan Light Source (TLS) and Taiwan Photon Source (TPS) are studied using various types of beam loss monitors (BLMs). The performance of readout devices and the system integration are also presented in this paper. At the TLS, the high beam loss spots downstream of the superconducting wigglers comes from the vertical aperture limit. The highest radiation is detected after the injection section and comes mainly from X-rays generated by the superconductin… Show more

“…The PIN diodes yield to optical monitors because of a response time (microseconds or more due to ionization effect) and sensitivity (due to the small detection area) and are suitable for only rough beam loss diagnostics during accelerator commissioning. A BLM system based on PIN diodes (Bergoz Instrumentation) has been used as a very effective tool for commissioning and beam tuning in the light source, such as Sirius, TPS, and ALBA [5][6][7]. In some of them, e.g., SOLEIL, PIN diodes are replaced with more sensitive SBLMs to upgrade the BLM system [8].…”

“…As a consequence, upon the launch of a new project TPS, the open source software EPICS was adopted without any objections. Following the commissioning of TPS [1,2] and its opening for users, the control system of TLS has commenced a gradual migration to EPICS in order to mitigate the risk of obsolescence.…”
