Beam-Foil Lifetimes of Doubly-Excitedn=3 States of Three-Electron Ions C3+-F6+

Abstract: Decay curves of a number of n = 2 -n' = 3 transitions in the quartet term systems of C IV*, N V*, 0 VI*, and F VII* have been recorded. The extracted mean lives of n = 3 states are compared with other experimental data and with the results of several theoretical approximations. The results indicate that autoionization is not of major importance for the levels studied nor for the cascade-feeding states with high angular momentum.

“…[13]); for the quartet states his lifetimes are in good agreement with experimentally determined lifetimes [14]. The resulting correction is largest for the ls2p2 2D state and does not exceed 100 meV; for states 1~2~31' it is negligible compared to our error bars.…”

“…There is good agreement between the experimental and model-potential lifetimes, with most of the theoretical values lying within the experimental error bars [18,19]. We note that the n = 4 experimental values in Table 5 have relatively large error bars.…”

“…We note that the n = 4 experimental values in Table 5 have relatively large error bars. This is because they were not measured directly but were deduced from cascade corrections to n=3 levels [18]. We note also the comparatively long lifetime predicted for 2p 3 d 4F°.…”

“…This is experimentally verified through the absence of 2p states in the delayed spectra, which are also populated via similar paths. Transitions from a variety of ls21nl' states to the 4 p o state of C 3+, N 4+, 0 5+ and F 6+ give life times less than 30 ps [21]. Several transitions in the XUV region from high lying quartet states to the ( l s 2 s 2p)4p ° and (ls 2p2)4P e states of N 4+ and Ne 7+ observed in our laboratory give no evidence for sufficient replenishment ratios [22].…”
