The 3-GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex was commissioned in October 2007. Via the initial beam tuning and a series of underlying beam studies with low-intensity beams, since December 2009, we have intermittently been performing beam tuning experiments with higher-intensity beams including the injection painting technique. By optimizing the injection painting parameters, we have successfully achieved a 420 kW-equivalent output intensity at a low-level intensity loss of less than 1%. Also the corresponding numerical simulation well reproduced the observed painting parameter dependence on the beam loss, and captured a characteristic behavior of the high-intensity beam in the injection painting process. In this paper, we present the experimental results obtained in the course of the RCS beam power ramp-up, especially on the beam loss reduction achieved by employing the injection painting, together with the numerical simulation results.

The most important issue in a high intensity proton accelerator is to keep the accelerator tunnel in a hands-on-maintenance condition. A collimation system was designed and installed in 3GeV Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) to be localized the beam loss point to a restricted area. The experimental results indicated that the RCS collimation system performs well enough such that nearly all the ring components are maintained in good condition. However, as the beam power increased, unexpected losses downstream of the injection foil increased. Therefore, an additional collimator was installed that successfully reduced such unexpected losses.

For the acceleration of very high intensity protons in the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), the beam loading compensation in the rf accelerating cavities is implemented. The magnetic-alloy (MA) loaded cavities, which have a wideband frequency response, are employed in the J-PARC RCS. The wake voltage in the wide-band MA cavity consists of not only a component of the fundamental accelerating rf, but also the higher harmonics. We developed a multiharmonic feedforward compensation system, which handles the most important three harmonics (h ¼ 2; 4; 6). The function of the multiharmonic feedforward is described. Adjustments of the amplitude and phase patterns for the cancellation of the wake voltage during the acceleration period are not trivial. We developed the commissioning methodology of the feedforward. We describe the methodology in the cases without and with driving the accelerating rf. The commissioning of the systems for 11 cavities in the RCS was successful. We describe the commissioning results and the beneficial effects of the feedforward compensation in the beam operation.
