Beagle + + : Semantically Enhanced Searching and Ranking on the Desktop

Abstract: Abstract. Existing desktop search applications, trying to keep up with the rapidly increasing storage capacities of our hard disks, offer an incomplete solution for information retrieval. In this paper we describe our Beagle ++ desktop search prototype, which enhances conventional fulltext search with semantics and ranking modules. This prototype extracts and stores activity-based metadata explicitly as RDF annotations. Our main contributions are extensions we integrate into the Beagle desktop search infrastru… Show more

“…Beagle++ [6] is a desktop search system that indexes all personal documents and generates additional metadata that describes these documents, other resources, as well as their relationships. Triggered by modification events, Beagle++ annotates the material that the user has read, used, written or commented upon.…”

“…Finally, in prior work [9,10] we described our Beagle ++8 personal information system, a semantically enriched extension of the Beagle open sources desktop search engine. There, we proposed various heuristics to generate ample activity based metadata associated to each desktop item.…”

“…Several projects have started to explore search and resource organization on the desktop, including Stuff I've Seen [11], Haystack [27], Gnowsis [30], and our Beagle ++ project [10]. Moreover, at a recent panel at WWW 2005, one of the panelists identified desktop search as one of the future search engine development directions, together with other "vertical" search areas, such as image or video search [26].…”
