BEACON: A Cloud Network Federation Framework

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents the BEACON Framework, which will enable the provision and management of cross-site virtual networks for federated cloud infrastructures in order to support the automated deployment of applications and services across different clouds and datacenters. The proposed framework will support different federation architectures, going from tightly coupled (datacenter federation) to loosely coupled (cloud federation and multi-cloud orchestration) architectures, and will enable the creation… Show more

“…To address scalability and security, a hierarchical network service is suggested and, in the higher levels, inter-site forwarding enables connectivity between a site VAN fragment and a fragment of the VAN located at a remote site using VAN proxies. This approach has been continued [9] and adopted by the EU project BEACON [3]. Also, the EU project NOVI [10] created a federated testbed, combining PlanetLab and FEDER-ICA, based on the NSwitch, a distributed virtual switch based on Open vSwitch that enables a virtual entity in one domain to be connected at protocol layer 2 with another virtual entity in a remote domain.…”

“…In recent years, Cloud computing and IoT paradigms along with the concept of the federation have been combined so that different variants born. The first paradigm variation regarded Cloud federation that was defined as a mesh of Cloud providers that are interconnected to provide a universal decentralized computing environment where everything is driven by constraints and agreements in a ubiquitous, multi-provider infrastructure [3]. With the advent of IoT, the IoT Cloud paradigm raised.…”
