BDNF-induced LTP is associated with rapid Arc/Arg3.1-dependent enhancement in adult hippocampal neurogenesis

Abstract: Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus is a remarkable phenomenon involved in various aspects of learning and memory as well as disease pathophysiology. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) represents a major player in the regulation of this unique form of neuroplasticity, yet the mechanisms underlying its pro-neurogenic actions remain unclear. Here, we examined the effects associated with brief (25 min), unilateral infusion of BDNF in the rat dentate gyrus. Acute BDNF infusion induced long-term potentiatio… Show more

“…An association of LTP with hippocampus‐dependent learning and memory (Bliss and Collingridge, ) as well as with adult neurogenesis has been previously reported (Kuipers et al, ). Reduced neurogenesis causes impaired LTP in the dentate gyrus (Saxe et al, ), while enriched housing with physical exercise increases LTP in CA1 (Hosseiny et al, ).…”

“…Modulation of BDNF-dependent Arc expression was previously associated with increased hippocampal synaptic plasticity (Kuipers et al, 2016 ), particularly with formation of long-term potentiation (LTP) (Messaoudi et al, 2007 ). Therefore, we went on to test if the altered hippocampal BDNF expression levels and neuronal excitability changes observed after acoustic enrichment or acoustic trauma also influenced hippocampal synaptic plasticity in the BLEV reporter mouse.…”

“…Neurotrophins ( Specifically, NTFs regulate synaptic plasticity, protect neurons from apoptosis, and stimulate neurogenesis (Skaper, 2012, Leal et al, 2015, Kuipers et al, 2016, Wurzelmann et al, 2017. The neuroprotective effect of agathisflavone was associated with the increase of the NTFs BDNF, NGF, CDNG, NT4 and GDNF.…”
