Abstract: Background: The parasitic Platyhelminthes (Neodermata) contains three parasitic groups of flatworms, each having a unique morphology, and life style: Monogenea (primarily ectoparasitic), Trematoda (endoparasitic flukes), and Cestoda (endoparasitic tapeworms). The evolutionary origin of complex life cyles (multiple obligate hosts, as found in Trematoda and Cestoda) and of endo-/ ecto-parasitism in these groups is still under debate and these questions can be resolved, only if the phylogenetic position of the Mo… Show more

“…This is plausible given that a similar process of gene loss may have occurred in the aflatoxin gene cluster (Carbone et al, 2007b). For example, putative heterothallic species A. flavus and A. parasiticus show striking variation in their chemotype profiles, some of which is directly attributable to gene loss (Chang et al, 2005;Ehrlich et al, 2004).…”

“…N. girellae also has a third N. girellae vasa -like gene ( Ngvlg3 ) that groups with vasa orthologues. This is noteworthy from a phylogenetic point of view since it has been proposed that monogeneans are basal to a clade composed of Classes Trematoda and Cestoda [11] and suggests that vasa orthologues had been lost in the common ancestor of flukes and tapeworms. However, transcripts encoding Ngvlg3 mRNA were not detectable while silencing Ngvlg3 did not affect gonad anatomy in the same fashion as silencing Ngvlg1 (PL10-like cluster) and Ngvlg2 [10].…”
