Battle narratives

Abstract: “All are involved ceaselessly in a lifelong war against all states” (Plato Laws , 625e). The Cretan Stranger in Plato dialogue was not wrong. Warfare was almost a constant reality in the ancient world, and the continuing prominence of battles and war and of military metaphors in literature of all genres is hardly surprising.
