Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in urban fragments of Maringá, Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: Bat assemblages in two urban fragments of Maringá city, north of the state of Paraná, southern Brazil, were inventoried. These fragments, Parque do Ingá (48 ha) and Parque Florestal dos Pioneiros (59 ha), are located in a subtropical region covered by semideciduous Atlantic forest. Bats were sampled with mist-nets from August 2006 to July 2007, over 24 nights (12 hours a night), adding up to a total of 30,240 h.m2 of net effort. A total of 839 individuals were captured belonging to 10 species and four families… Show more

“…Bernardi et al 2007, Freitas et al 2011, Gazarini and Pedro 2013, Silva et al 2013, Loureiro and Gregorin 2015. Because deciduous seasonal and Araucaria Pine forest cover large extensions in the southern region of Brazil (Vibrans et al 2010, Vibrans et al 2013, it is possible that the distribution of M. neglectus is even larger in this region (Passos et al 2010).…”

“…The species is often recorded in ombrophylous and semidecidual forests (Fabián and Gregorin 2007), at different levels of conservation, including urban areas (Lim and Engstrom 2001, Pedro et al 2001, Barquez et al 2011, Chaves et al 2012, Gazarini and Pedro 2013. It is an aerial insectivore as all other species of Molossidae (Fabián and Gregorin 2007).…”

“…Considering the sampling effort applied, which was small, the richness obtained was satisfactory. Studies in fragments of semi-deciduous seasonal forests or urban areas in other municipalities of Paraná have obtained similar or higher number of species, but using a much higher sampling effort ( The small sample obtained in the forest fragment of the rural property does not represent well the local bats community, a higher sampling effort (Reis & Muller 1995, Sekiama et al 2001, Bianconi et al 2004, Arnone & Passos 2007, Graciolli & Bianconi 2007, Ortêncio-Filho & Reis 2009, Gazarini & Pedro 2013.…”

“…Some bat species are able to adapt to urban areas, where they find food and roosts (e.g., CôrteS et al, 1994;Bredt et al, 1996;Sazima et al, 1994;Fenton, 1997;zórtea & aGuiar, 2001;Lima, 2008;Gazarini & Pedro, 2013). In these areas they can reach high density, as a result of the absence of predators and potential competitors, and of the abundance of resources.…”

“…However, several localities included in this analysis are forest fragments that were preserved and are currently used by the public, as in Rio de Janeiro, where eight parks have been sampled, which are actually forest remnants and not urban parks (see eSBérard, 2003a). Lists of bat species of Brazilian metropolitan areas are available for Brasília (Bredt & uieda, 1996), Belo Horizonte (KneGt et al, 2005), Juiz de Fora (BarroS et al, 2006), São Paulo (SiLva et al, 1996Gazarini &Pedro, 2013), andLondrina (reiS et al, 2002). However, these lists were based mainly on donated animals or on few sampling nights in most localities (Bredt & uieda, 1996;reiS et al, 2002;KneGt et al, 2005;BarroS et al, 2006).…”
