Bored and encrusted carbonate concretions, termed hiatus concretions, coming from the Middle Jurassic (Upper Bajocian and Bathonian) siliciclastics of the Polish Jura, south-central Poland, have been subjected to detailed paleoecological investigation for the first time. The concretions possess variable morphology and bear distinct traces of bioerosion and encrustation as a result of exhumation on the sea floor during intervals of low sedimentation and/or erosion. The borings are dominated by Gastrochaenolites and Entobia. Epilithozoans, represented by at least 26 taxa, are dominated by sabellid/serpulid worm tubes and bryozoans, while sponges and corals are minor. No relationship between the concretion size and the number of encrusters has been found, suggesting that concretion size was not the primary factor controlling diversity. Stable isotope analyses and the presence of crustacean scratch marks and Rhizocorallium traces on many of the hiatus concretions indicate that they formed just below the sediment-water interface, within the sulfate reduction zone. Moreover, crustacean activities may have been a prelude to their origin, as shapes of many concretions closely resemble thalassinoidean burrow systems. It is also possible that crustacean activity around the concretions promoted their exhumation by loosening the surrounding soft sediment. The presence of borings and encrusters on different concretion surfaces, as well as truncated borings and a number of abraded epilithozoans, indicate that after the concretions were exhumed they were repeatedly overturned and moved on the sea floor, probably due to episodic storm-related bottom currents in shallow subtidal environment.

Proposed depositional models for Miocene Amazon foreland basin strata (Pebas Formation, Peru) are controversial. Recent depositional models include lacustrine and tidally influenced, brackishwater embayment. This paper presents data that support tidally influenced, brackish-water deposition for at least part of Pebas time (10-14 Ma). Two parasequences are presented (Santa Julia and Tamshiyacu). Both crop out along the Amazon River in Upper Amazonia near Iquitos, Peru. At these locations, abundant evidence of brackish-water, tidally influenced deposition is documented, including marginal marine bioturbation, sedimentary couplets, semidiurnal couplets (preserved in burrows), and pinstripe lamination. The deposits are locally highly bioturbated. At both locations ichnogenera normally associated with marine to brackish-water depositional environments are common. Three normally marginal-marine ichnofabrics are reported: (1) a Chondritesreburrowed, Planolites ichnofabric resident only in massive-appearing muds;( 2) a Scolicia (Laminites), Thalassinoides, Ophiomorpha ichnofabric that is manifested as intensely bioturbated silty sands; and (3) a Thalassinoides-generated ichnofabric that is interpreted to have descended into consolidated substrates and is thus representative of the Glossifungites Ichnofacies. Several trace fossils contain laminated infills organized into distinct sedimentary couplets that are best interpreted as resulting from semidiurnal processes.Six conclusions are arrived at: (1) sedimentological and ichnological data consistently indicate that sediment accumulation dominantly occurred in sporadically dysaerobic, marine to brackish water, under a tidal influence; (2) sediment accumulation occurred in bay-margin environments that prograded into a shallow, quiescent bay; (3) a stratified water column is indicated by the ichnofauna; (4) low accommodation space, repetitive and rapid adjustments of relative sea level, shallow wave base, and a stratified water column combined to generate an atypical parasequence architecture; (5) previously published isotopic data are consistent with sediment accumulation in brackish to marine water; and (6) marine incursion into Amazonia occurred during the Middle Miocene.

This study considers the construction and functionality of biogenic structures made by marine, vermiform nemerteans, polychaetes and hemichordates; marine crustaceans; motile bivalves; motile echinoderms; and sponges and sea anemones. We report on a range of modern biogenic structures similar to several known ichnogenera. Vermiform animals dominantly occupy vertical burrows that range from simple through helical shafts to Y-and U-shapes. Horizontal traces made by worms range in form, but are dominated by branching and variably sinuous to meandering burrows. Crustaceans primarily excavate open burrow systems that possess a range of architectures that are similar to either Thalassinoides or Psilonichnus. Smaller crustaceans, such as amphipods, mix the sediment. Bivalve traces vary in form, but generally preserve evidence of vertically oriented filter or interface-deposit feeding from a stationary location, rapid vertical escape, or horizontal grazing. Echinoderms dominantly preserve body impressions and motility traces, such as Asteriacites. An important class of biogenic structure, Scolicia and Bichordites, are made by urchins. Finally, sea anemones can generate large, penetrative, conical biogenic structures. Large, open horizontal networks serve as domiciles and deposit-feeding structures for crustaceans, but with worms similar burrow types are used more for passive carnivory and establishing an interface-feeding network. We report that the trace fossil Gyrolithes potentially represents mechanical ramps for shrimp, but is used as a sediment holdfast when made by worms. Finally, Y-shaped burrows are used for filter feeding in shrimp, and interface-deposit feeding in worms. These examples emphasize that inferences of behavior in the rock record are interpretive.
