Batch foam separation of a soluble protein

Abstract: Removal of protein dissolved in water by batch foam separation was conducted with using ovalbumin (OA) as a model protein in the light of wastewater treatment reducing organic loading. The removal efficiency had a maximum value near the i.e.p. of OA (pH 4.6), thus, most experiments were conducted at pH 4.6. Typical experimental conditions; superficial gas velocity, U g : 1.97×10

“…This accessible technique has been studied in many fields, such as chemical/biochemical engineering, analytical chemistry, and wastewater treatment (Maruyama et al, 2007). In principle, the strong amphipathic nature of proteins and enzymes, with polar and non-polar groups, causes them to be preferentially adsorbed at the gas-liquid interface and foam fractionation can be used to separate and to concentrate such proteins (Aksay and Mazza, 2007).…”

“…Pre-purification steps may improve the yield of the final product. Foam fractionation is an accessible method for enriching the proteins in a solution with potential of lowering the costs of downstream processing [58,59]. The latter contributes almost 60 % of the total cost of production [60,61].…”
