Feeding habits of young predatory fishes in marsh creeks situated along the salinity gradient of the Schelde estuary, Belgium and The Netherlands Abstract Fish and macrobenthos were sampled in four different marshes along the salinity gradient of the Schelde estuary, Belgium/Netherlands, to investigate the importance of marsh creeks as foraging grounds for the dominant, larger fish species. The total density and biomass of all the main macrobenthic taxa (Corophium volutator, Nereis diversicolor, Oligochaeta, Macoma baltica and Heteromastus fliliformis) were measured. The feeding habits of the larger predatory fishes (Platichthys flesus, Dicentrarchus labrax) were investigated. Qualitative and quantitative stomach analyses included the calculation of different indices, showing the niche breadth (as diet diversity) and the niche overlap (as similarity between the predators' diet) for this habitat. These analyses showed that the two most important benthic prey species for P. flesus were C. volutator and N. diversicolor. D. labrax preyed upon a wider range of species, including C. volutator, N. diversicolor, Crangon crangon, Carcinus maenas and Orchestia spp. The stomach diversity of D. labrax and P. flesus showed differences between the marshes although there was no consistent pattern in diet composition, reflecting the opportunistic nature of feeding by these large predators. The fullness indices of both flounder and sea bass did not differ significantly along the salinity gradient and the estimated minimum consumption by these predators did not indicate a top-down control of the macrobenthic community. The salt marsh creeks seem to provide excess food for the visiting fish species. The benthic prey was present in very high abundances, which may suggest that the typical nursery species such as C. crangon and C. maenas, and early juveniles of P. flesus, D. labrax and Pomatoschistus microps were not preyed upon significantly. This supports the hypothesis that salt marsh creeks provide good refuge areas for nursery species against predation by larger fish.

Salt marshes form true ecotones between land and sea fauna and flora that have adapted to an environment that is both aquatic and terrestrial in nature. Despite the extreme and sharp gradients that exist in salt marshes, they form the temporary or permanent home for many animals and plants and they fulfil many important roles in marine and estuarine ecosystems. While research on the terrestrial component of European marshes has helped in their management, knowledge of the aquatic component has largely been ignored in safeguarding the existence and ecological importance of tidal marshes. This situation is in sharp contrast with studies of coastal marshes along the eastern and southeastern coasts of North America. The typical European salt marsh differs in several physical aspects from the typical American salt marsh, but recent investigations have indicated parallels regarding nekton habitat usage. The present paper reviews the current state of European studies on the habitat role that tidal marshes play for fish and crustacean fauna. Mirrored against the more extensive American literature, we discuss where functional similarities and differences exist between both types of tidal marshes and where further knowledge is still needed for European marshes. Management of European tidal marshes would benefit from extending the current knowledge, and this paper identifies potential topics of interest. Nursery areas of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) were investigated from spring 2005 to summer 2006 in areas along the French Mediterranean coast of the Gulf of Lion. Nurseries were identified by the presence of settling individuals of sea bass and young juveniles. These nurseries represent different types of sheltered shallow habitats, both natural such as coastal lagoons, estuaries, and artificial such as marinas. Settlement occurred from April to June during both years. The number of settling individuals varied between sites from just a few individuals to several thousand. In one given site, settlement also varied between 2005 and 2006. The size distribution of sampled individuals revealed that several pulses arrived in each nursery. At this stage, sea bass already exhibited a strong orientation capacity but a limited swimming ability. The magnitude of sea bass settlement in marinas requires better environmental management of such artificial areas.
