Bass nurseries on the west coast of the U.K.

Abstract: INTRODUCTIONPresence of O-group bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.), has been recorded for a number of estuaries and tidal backwaters in the south of the United Kingdom, including the tidal Thames (Wheeler, 1979), the outer Thames at Southend (Murie, 1903), the Medway (Van den Broek, 1979), Langstone Harbour (Reay, 1973), the Dart (Dando & Demir, 1985), and the Tamar (Hartley, 1940). “…The feeding habits of juvenile D. labrax have been studied in estuarine habitats (Roblin and Brusle 1984;Aprahamian and Barr 1985;Kelley 1986;Hostens and Mees 1999;Cabral and Costa 2001), but only a few previous studies have considered the feeding habits of sea bass in salt marshes. Laffaille et al (2000Laffaille et al ( , 2001b found that Neomysis integer and Orchestia gamarellus were the two major prey species of sea bass in the salt marsh of Mont Saint Michel Bay.…”

“…Labourg et al (1985) were the first to report on faunal samples collected in the intertidal marshes of the Gironde estuary, SW France. Frid (1988) and Frid & James (1989) Kelley (1986) and Kelley & Reay (1988) had reported on the occurrence of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and other fish in shallow marsh creeks.…”

“…Salt marshes are thought to play a key role in the production of the sea bass commercial fishery in the region of Mont-Saint Michel Bay . Kennedy & Fitzmaurice (1972) and Kelley (1986Kelley ( , 1988 have previously mentioned the importance of shallow creeks for sea bass.…”

“…Most of the data published on sea bass nurseries were based on observations made on Atlantic populations and principally those of the United Kingdom (Claridge et al, 1983;Dando & Demir, 1985;Kelley, 1986Kelley, , 2002Jennings & Pawson, 1992), the Netherlands (Beyst et al, 1999), the French Atlantic coast (reviewed by Fritsch, 2005) and the Portuguese coast (Cabral & Costa, 2001). In these regions, sea bass nursery areas are typically located in shallow estuaries and tidal marshes with mud flats.…”
