Basis and tools for a sustainable development of estuaries and coastal areas

Abstract: The Bay of Cullera is an example of a multi‐source polluted coastal environment. As a result of the combined discharge from the Júcar River and the sewage from a marine outfall, the Cullera coastal area presents occasionally severe water quality problems. The enhanced knowledge obtained for the most relevant processes affecting the quality of coastal and estuarine waters will lead to the production of suitable strategies and criteria for a sustainable development of these areas. This, together with the generat… Show more

“…The distribution of bacteria in Cullera Bay could be associated with the hydrodynamics of the area, since the surface circulation of coastal waters is driven by local wind fields. Within the bay there is a recirculation in the northern part due to the predominant E, ESE and S winds and the presence of the cape (Mestres et al 2004. Moreover, the scant fresh-water input from the Júcar River (generally 5 m 3 s -1 ) produces very low outflow speeds, so the influence of the river on the dynamics of the coastal currents in the bay is minimal.…”
