“…A species of Basidiobolus tentatively identified as B. ranarum was isolated recently from subcutaneous lesions in several human patients in Indonesia (Emmons, et al, 1957) ; the identity of this fungus, studied in detail by Drechsler (1958), still is open to question, for it displays several characteristics, including smooth zygospores, not common to B. ranarum. When additional isolates of this fungus are available, it may prove to be a distinct species.…”

“…They can carry the fungus in their alimentary tract or on their cuticle without being parasitized [2, 33, 34]. Degeneration of chitin, the major substance of the insects cuticle, is considered an important feature for explaining the spread of the fungus by insects [2, 35]. The Basidiobolus isolates in the present study degraded chitin weakly or not at all.…”

“…Basidiobolus ranarum is the preferred taxonomic designation for the pathogenic species, while other species such as B. haptosporus , B. meristosporus and B. heterosporus are regarded as synonyms . Although present worldwide, infections are rare and seem to be usually connected to warmer regions of mainly tropical to subtropical countries such as Uganda, Indonesia, Brazil, Australia and India . In recent years, however, a possible underestimation of basidiobolomycosis and especially gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB) has been addressed as the symptoms can be unspecific and might mimic other diseases .…”
