The primary goal of learning a foreign language is to be able to communicate in the language, both in spoken and written form. This is also the case for Indonesian learners especially learners of English Language Education Program in ULM who learn English as their major. However, most of them believe that without abundant knowledge of grammar, they will not be able to speak or even write in English well. One of the problems they face is that they still doubt or confuse which tense(s) of English they have to use when they speak or write. This study aimed at finding out the learners’ problems batch 2018 in using English tenses by using a multiple choice test and a questionnaire. The study employed a quantitative approach and described the result in descriptive form. The subject of this study was the whole population of English Language Education Program batch 2018, in total 98 students. The findings reveal that most of them have problems with past perfect tense (61%), past perfect continuous tense (61%), and future perfect continuous tense (67%). These problems related to the difficulty in applying the aspect and tense in the right context, first language interference, lack of practice and repetition, and students’ confidence in using the language. It is suggested that language teachers should focus their language instruction not only to form but also to function and meaning of the tenses. Additionally, using various techniques suited to teaching tenses is advisable to increase students’ to increase communicative skills.

This study diagnoses the challenges of foreign language learners in using the present perfect tense when writing in English. Most foreign language learners fail to correctly write sentences using the present perfect tense and substitute it with the past tense. The researchers suggest an instructional program based on steps for teachers to solve the problem of the present perfect tense. The study sample is twenty students in the seventh grade in one of the government schools for girls. The researchers asked the participants to write sentences using the present perfect tense. After analysing students' sentences, the researchers detected many incorrect cases of using of the present perfect tense and highlighted the incorrect usage for discussion. The results show that most errors stemmed from Arabic words interfering with English. The present perfect tense presents more significant challenges for Arab students than the simple past tense. The study showed that students' native language influences English grammatical structure use. These results have significant implications for how the mother language affects EFL classrooms. The results also reflect the students’ misunderstanding of the meaning of the present perfect since they are unfamiliar with the function of the present tense. Finally, teachers are part of the problem because they follow the traditional grammar teaching method, which focuses on structure rather than function. The researchers suggest a series of recommendations based on the study's findings.

English is an international language that dominates in almost every sector of human activity. Despite learning English as a foreign language from elementary school, Indonesian students still face difficulties in speaking and writing correct English even during their higher levels of education. Researchers claim that traditional English teaching methods have failed to motivate students to keep constant attention. As a result of less engagement in the learning process at an early stage, students end up facing understanding issues. This study aims to introduce a mixed method of teaching tenses in English grammar. This combined teaching approach focuses on increasing motivation, performance, and developing a competitive mentality among students. The method applied is using smart multimedia along with gamification in an informal cooperative learning group. The findings indicated that using gamification and smart multimedia in an informal cooperative learning group increases student performance, motivation, and gives satisfaction to students in the learning process.
