Technetium-99 (99Tc) is one of the most-problematic radioisotopes in used nuclear fuel owing to its intrinsic features of a high fission yield, long half-life, high environmental mobility, volatile nature during waste vitrification, and its redox interface capability with actinides during used fuel repossessing. The selective separation of pertechnetate (TcO4 –) from legacy nuclear waste and contaminated natural water is therefore highly desirable but still a significant challenge, because the conditions of a strong radiation field, high ionic strength, high acidity/alkalinity, and large amounts of competing anions are often involved in these systems. Until now, there are a handful of functional materials that can efficiently remove TcO4 – from nuclear waste solutions with high uptake capacities, fast kinetics, and good selectivity, but room still remains to further improve our capabilities for controlling the contamination/separation of TcO4 –. In this Perspective, we discuss the current state of the art TcO4 – separation materials including precipitation agents, reducing materials, ion-exchange resins, inorganic cationic frameworks, cationic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and cationic polymeric networks (CPNs) materials. The intriguing separation mechanisms of these materials for TcO4 – are also disclosed, which may hopefully shed light on further development in this field.

A novel selective film comprised of cross-linked quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) has been developed for use in a spectroelectrochemical sensor. The development, performance and characterization of this film are described. Ferrocyanide was used as a model spectroelectrochemical analyte. This film has demonstrated a number of advantages over other films used in the sensor, including outstanding ruggedness and selectivity, rapid response, capability for multiple measurements on one film, and a fast, simple preparation. Ion pairing between ferrocyanide and quaternized pyridine in the film was observed, causing asymmetry in cyclic voltammograms of ferrocyanide. Physical changes in the film were monitored using spectroscopic ellipsometry as the film was exposed to supporting electrolyte and ferrocyanide/supporting electrolyte solutions. The sensor exhibits a linear response to ferrocyanide over the range 0.008 -0.2 mM.

Quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) (QPVP) has been incorporated as an anion exchanger into sol-gel derived silica films for use in a spectroelectrochemical sensor. The preparation, characteristics and performance of these films are described. The films, which are spin-coated onto the surface of a planar optically transparent electrode, are optically transparent and uniform. Scanning electron microscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry have been used to examine film structure, thickness and optical properties. These films have been shown both spectroscopically and electrochemically to preconcentrate ferrocyanide, a model analyte for the sensor. The films can be regenerated for multiple measurements by exposure to 1 M KNO 3 . The effects of polymer molecular weight and storage conditions on film performance are described. The overall response of this film is comparable to the poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride)-silica films previously used for this sensor.
