We have established a novel method for quadrature signal construction in a semiconductor laser diode self-mixing interferometry system using two photodiodes and a beam splitter with a liquid crystal phase shifter (LCPS). This method entails placing an LCPS between the photodiode and the beam splitter so that another phase shift self-mixing signal can be obtained. Then, an arctangent phase algorithm can be used to demodulate the pair of quadrature signals to reconstruct the vibration information of the target object. This method simplifies the self-mixing signal demodulation process and the reconstruction of vibration information. Our experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of using self-mixing phase shifter detection for self-mixing optical measurements. The work illustrates a sort of efficient and referable novel design guidance model which supports the quadrature signals construction in a self-mixing interferometer based on a semiconductor laser diode.

A real mass application for VCSELs is their use in optical mice and sensing. As illumination source for sensing applications VCSELs offer a better performance than LEDs. The even more advanced approach of laser self-mixing interference sensors allows a next step in integration, accuracy and new application fields. This chapter summarizes the major requirements towards VCSELs in illumination for sensing applications and gives typical specifications. A detailed description of the production process and the achieved reproducibility makes clear that these VCSELs are ideally suited for production in large quantities. In the second half of the chapter the self-mixing interference method is described in more detail and a highly integrated two axes laser Doppler interferometer is shown. This product is designed for a laser mouse but offers a number of other sensing applications.

Continuous frequency tuning of an external cavity diode laser significantly beyond the free spectral range by sweeping the injection current

In this study, the focus is on continuously tuning an external cavity diode laser equipped with an antireflection-coated laser diode over a 14.8 GHz range, 4.5 times larger than the free spectral range, using only injection current sweeps. In contrast, the absence of antireflection coating led to a tuning range of only one-fifth of the free spectral range, accompanied by hysteresis on mode hops. Theoretical analysis of this observed hysteresis suggests that broad tuning can be achieved when the longitudinal modes of the solitary laser diode are eliminated through the antireflection coating.
