Baseline urinalysis results in 32 healthy Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus)

ANIMALS 32 Antillean manatees in 5 Caribbean oceanaria and rescue centers. “…Studies conducted under human care of Antillean manatees have yielded an important amount of information on the behavior, physiology, morphology and health of the subspecies (e.g., Garcés-Pires et al, 2016;Cuartas et al, 2020;Cabrias-Contreras et al, 2021). Currently, several dozen Antillean manatees are held in facilities in Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Belize, Guyana, and Colombia, in many cases for rehabilitation and release purposes.…”

“…While no published urinalysis parameters currently exist for the Florida manatee, baseline urinalysis was recently reported in Antillean manatees, a closely related subspecies. 5 In the second phase of the study, SDMA reference intervals were generated from two presumably healthy wild manatee populations. Calves were eliminated from the data set given the presence of outliers.…”
