Baseline of butyltin contamination in sediments of Sundarban mangrove wetland and adjacent coastal regions, India

Abstract: The study reports the first assessment for the quantification and speciation of butyltins (BTs) in surface marine sediment samples (0-5 cm) from intertidal mudflats of Sundarban mangrove wetland along with the Hugli (Ganges) river basin, eastern coastal part of India. Concentrations of tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) were monitored at 16 stations and present at all study areas, in concentrations in sediments up to 84.2, 26.4 and 48.0 ng g(-1) of TBT, DBT and MBT, respectively. “…The present results of soil TOC content (0.69–20.23 g kg −1 ) in the YRD (Table 1) were similar to the most of coastal wetlands of China18193132333435 and Sundarban mangrove wetland36 and the Mai Po Marshes coastal wetland37, but much lower than that in Louisiana coastal wetlands38. Compared to the reported results of coastal wetlands, the soil N contents in present study were much lower than those in Yangtze Estuary (southern China)333940 and coastal wetlands of southern India41.…”

“…During the dry season, the TBT concentrations exhibited much lower levels, whereas the DBT and MBT concentrations were higher. The apparent extent of the TBT degradation was thus more important, most likely due to the longer residence times in the estuary that promote both bacterial and photochemical degradation processes (Antizar-Ladislao et al, 2011).…”

“…Values of BDI lower than 1 indicate that BT contamination is recent, and values of BDI higher than 1 indicate that there were no recent inputs of BTs to the sediments. The observed values of BTs in the present study (ranging from 1 to 156—Figure S4 ) indicate that the BT contamination in the study area is not recent except for some location near the TA coast (BT < 1), thus assuming that the BT contamination can be high enough to produce harmful effects on marine organisms (Antizar-Ladislao et al 2011 ).…”
