Baseline micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities frequencies in native fishes from the Paraná River (Argentina)

Abstract: This work aims to establish baseline frequencies of micronuclei (MN) and nuclear abnormalities (NA) in native fish species collected in situ from the Paraná River. For this purpose, the micronucleus test was applied in peripheral blood erythrocytes from specimens obtained from samplings collected at two localities (Posadas and Candelaria, Misiones, Argentina) during the period 2007-2010. The results were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test. Data from nine fish species were obtained, among whic… Show more

“…In the present study, maximum frequency of MN (5.03 ± 1.89%) was at -1 Ag-NPs concentration after 14 and continues to increase. Similar study was performed by Furnus et al (2014), how recorded slightly different frequency of MN might be due to the difference in the fish species and most probably the environment. They performed the micronuclei assay for nine collected fish species in the River Paraná and revealed the highest MN and NA frequencies in erythrocytes of Steindachnerina brevipinna (Characiformes) significantly different from other species.…”

“…Furnus et al (2014) found that Steindachnerina brevipinna in the Paraná River had a high frequency of MN that was associated to environmental alterations. Moreover, Linde-Arias et al (2008a) found that frequencies of MN in Oreochromis niloticus were lower at the reference site than at the others.…”

“…Various abnormalities in the form of the erythrocyte nuclei are used as effective indicators of the negative influence of the environment on the cells of many aquatic animals (Ateeq et al, 2002;Jiraungkoorskul et al, 2007;Ali et al, 2008;Anbumani and Mohankumar, 2011;Walia et al, 2013;Hayretdag et al, 2014;Furnus et al, 2014;Asker et al, 2015). The sublingual salt gland is the primary site of salt excretion in sea snakes (Babonis et al, 2009), but dice snakes lack salt glands.…”
