Purpose: The face is considered to be the most crucial aspect to define the beauty of a particular individual. Therefore, the facial anatomy of different ethnic groups must be well understood for forensic studies, research, and also for surgery purposes. The purpose of this study is to establish normal values of canthal distances and mouth width parameters in adult Kalabaris in Rivers State, Nigeria, to determine sexual dimorphism and also to correlate them with age. Methodology: The study was conducted using a total of 315 participants, consisting of 163 females and 152 males, selected randomly from the various Kalabari communities, between the ages of 19 and 50. Participants were measured using a digital Vernier caliper. Findings: The data were collected and analysed using SPSS, and results were expressed in mean ± standard deviation. The mean values of inner canthal distance in adult males and females were 36.64 ± 1.81mm and 34.78 ± 3.25mm respectively. Mean values for outer canthal distance were 99.30 ± 3.63mm for males and 97.91 ± 4.45mm for females. The mean values for mouth width in males was 55.69 ± 5.58mm, whereas in females it was 53.92 ± 3.23mm. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: There is sexual dimorphism in the parameters measured, and it also showed significant positive relation with age, p < 0.05. Comparison with other population showed the mean values for the parameters in the adult kalabari population differ from them. Data obtained in this study would provide basis for application in forensics, maxillofacial surgery and clinical practice in Rivers State, Nigeria We recommend that the result of this study be used as a baseline data for future works and similar studies be done on other ethnic groups

Introduction: Facial anthropometry is required in many medical and dental disciplines, particularly for prosthodontists, orthodontists, plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, and forensic medicine experts. An individual's facial shape is a reflection of their race, age, and gender. The present study aimed at determining the facial and nasal indices among the Akan ethnic group in Kumasi, Ghana.Methodology: A total of 307 (182 males and 125 females) Akan adult volunteers between the age of 18 - 30 years were recruited for the study. Standard procedures were used to obtain the necessary facial and nasal measurements for generating the appropriate indices. A p-value of 0.05 or less was judged statistically significant.Results: In males, the facial index ranged from 75.28 to 117.90, while in females it ranged from 76.58 to 97.87. The nasal index ranged from 52.0 to 115.3 in males and 52.0 to 105.7 in females. There were significant differences between males and females in all facial parameters utilized to calculate facial and nasal indices. The facial index, but not the nasal index, differed significantly between Akan males and females. Mesoprosopic was the most prevalent face type in both male and female Akan populations, whereas mesorrhine was the most common nose type.Conclusion: The findings of this study can be used as a reference to improve the outcome of cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery and rhinoplasty, as well as for medico-legal purposes in the Akan people of Ghana.

Personal identification is one of the most important elements in any medico-legal and forensic investigation. It is a challenging task for both the forensic experts and physical anthropologists when identifications of unknown dismembered remains are involved. The aim and objectives of the present investigation was to determine sex by using hand length (HL) and hand breadth (HB) among an indigenous adult Karbi tribe of Karbi Anglong, Assam, India. The present community based cross-sectional investigation was undertaken among 320 unrelated adult Karbi individuals (160 males;160 females) between the age-group of 20-50 years, using stratified random sampling method. The anthropometric measurements of HL and HB were collected using standard procedures. The statistical analysis of descriptive statistics, ANOVA, binary logistic regression (BLR) and AUC-ROC were performed using SPSS (version 16.0). The results indicate that mean of LHL, RHL, LHB, RHB, LHI and RHI were observed to be significantly higher among men than women (p<0.01). The investigation highlights the existence of sexual dimorphism in HL and HB (p<0.01). The mean bilateral difference was found to be statistically not significant in both sexes in HL and HB (p>0.05). The BLR analysis showed that HB was found to be significantly more associated with sex estimation than the HL in both sexes (p<0.01). The AUC-ROC analysis was performed to test the predictive accuracy in sex estimation after predicting the probability of HL and HB. The AUC-ROC analysis showed that combined HB than HL have more accuracy over a single hand dimension measure (for example, LHL, RHL, LBH and RHB) to determine the sex (p<0.01).The equation of the present investigation may prove to be useful in sex estimation of an adult individual when any fragmented or mutilated body parts are brought for the forensic science and medico-legal investigations.
