Partial molar volumes are fundamental thermodynamic properties of ions, complexes, and compounds in solution; partial molar volumes of reactants and products are the components of volume profiles for reactions in solution. This review documents partial molar volumes of a varied selection of inorganic coordination complexes, preceded by an outline of partial molar volumes for metal cations, halides, and oxoanions -all in aqueous solution. The final section discusses intrinsic and electrostriction contributions to partial molar volumes and provides examples of their appearance in volume profiles.

The good resolution of the methyl signals in the 1 H NMR spectrum of the cis (<5 = 2.22ppm) and trans (<5 = 1.79ppm) aqua products allowed a quantitative evaluation, without isolation of the products [16]. The kinetics of aquation and base hydrolysis reactions of fmns-[Co(NH3 )4(NH2CH3)(OSC>3)r have been studied. In acid solution the aquation rate, Raq, follows the equation Raq/[complex] = ks + fcc[H + ], at constant ionic strenght μ = 1.0 Μ. The activation parameters are ΔΗ* = 88.8 kj mol 1 , AS* =-50.5 JK^mor 1 , ΔΗ* = 96.7 kj mol 1 and AS* =-23 JK 1 mol 1 . The rate constants at 25°C are ks = 4.15 χ 10 V 1 and fcc = 4.52M V 1 . The rate of base hydrolysis, Roh, follows the equation RoH^com-plex] = /C0H [OH -]. The activation parameters are Δ/ί£Η =74.9kJmol 1 and AS^H = 2JK^mol 1 and the rate constant is JCOH = 0.58M J S 1 at 25°C and μ, = 0.15 Μ. The stereochemistry of the hidroxo product has been determined (cis-[Co(NH3)4(NH2CH3)-(OH)] 2+ =9%). The results are discussed in the light of the reaction mechanisms proposed so far.

Kinetic studies of solvent structure effects and solute-solvent interactions on the solvolysis of [Co(NH 3 ) 5 Cl] 2+ complex ion have been investigated spectrophotometrically in binary aqueous mixtures. Three cosolvents were used (acetonitrile, dimethylsulfoxide, and urea) over a wide range of temperatures. Nonlinear plots were found for log(rate constant) against the reciprocal of the relative permitivity of the medium. The enthalpy and entropy of activation ( H # and S # ) exhibited extrema in the same composition region where the physical properties indicate sharp changes in the structure of the solvent, confirming that the solvent structure is an important factor in determining the solvolytic reactivity.
