Base-free hydrogen generation from methanol using a bi-catalytic system

Abstract: A bi-catalytic system, in which Ru-MACHO-BH and Ru(H)2(dppe)2 interact in a synergistic manner, was developed for the base-free dehydrogenation of methanol. A total TON > 4200 was obtained with only trace amounts of CO contamination (<8 ppm) in the produced gas.

“…At the same time, Grützmacher and co‐workers showed the dehydrogenation of methanol by utilizing [K(dme) 2 ][RuH(trop 2 dad)] ( 1 , trop 2 dad=1,4‐bis(5H‐dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten‐5‐yl)‐1,4‐diazabuta‐1,3‐diene) without any additives in THF (TON=540) . Later on, the first homogeneous bimetallic system based on [Ru(H)(BH 4 )(CO)(HN{CH 2 CH 2 P( i Pr) 2 } 2 )] and [Ru(H) 2 (dppe) 2 ] ( 7 ) was reported under base‐free conditions (TON=4286) . Furthermore, Milstein and co‐workers applied [Ru(H)(Cl)(CO)(NNP t Bu )] ( 6 , NNP t Bu =6‐di‐tert‐butylphosphinomethyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine) as a catalyst for this reaction and obtained a high TON (28 661) under optimized conditions .…”

“…A recent publication by Beller and co-workers has made a significant step towards this. This has been accomplished by using a bi-catalytic system where the synergistic benefits of the individual catalysts results in a high performance [88]. The two catalysts used, Ru-MACHO-BH and Ru(H) 2 (dppe) 2 worked by enhancing the speed of the formic acid dehydrogenation step.…”
