Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma of the palate

Abstract: considered to be a malignant lymphoma until immunostaining methods were applied. The nodular transformation of splenic red pulp in our three cases has not been seen without accompanying carcinomatous involvement. Therefore, it seems likely that this distinctive nodular pattern is caused by the infiltration of the metastatic tumour cells in the red pulp and accompanied by a desmoplastic stromal response. The degree of desmoplasia in the primary sites in our cases was generally low but the fibrosis of splenic re… Show more

“… 1 Since its initial description, BSCC has also been described in other head and neck sites such as the palate, buccal cavity, floor of mouth, nasopharynx, trachea, and sinonasal tract. 2–9 Although BSCC has predilection for the head and neck region, this tumor can also occur at other sites such as the esophagus, lung, thymus, anus, and cervix. 10–16 BSCC is considered an aggressive form of squamous cell carcinoma, with cases often presenting in advanced stages and often with metastases.…”

“…Upper aerodigestive tract is the most common site of origin of this tumour in the head and neck [2,3], especially epiglottis, hypopharynx (piriform sinus) and base of the tongue [4,5]. Other less common sites of origin in this region include floor of the mouth, oral mucosa, palate, tonsils, sinonasal tract, nasopharynx, and trachea [6][7][8][9][10][11]. Additionally, BSCC has been reported in oesophagus, lung, anus, cervix uteri, penis and urinary bladder [12][13][14][15][16][17].…”
