“…Some studies have shown that frailer patients with CHF are unlikely to fully perform self‐care behaviours compared with those without frailty (Chen et al, ; Sousa‐Santos et al, ) and that older patients with frailty are frequently admitted to the hospital compared with those without frailty (Go et al, ; Rodríguez‐Pascual et al, ; Volpato et al, ). A decline in ADLs for patients with CHF increases dependence on daily life, reduces self‐care and increases the use of more healthcare services (Chivite et al, ). According to Sun et al (), ADL‐dependent patients with CHF are non‐adherent to medications and have more sodium and water intake within 1 year after hospital discharge.…”

“…Although BI, which is commonly used in the field of stroke, 27,28 is a simple method to evaluate ADL at admission, only a few studies have investigated its usefulness in CVD. 3,8,14 In contrast to gait speed or the measurement of muscle strength, BI can be easily evaluated at admission in all patients including those who die in the acute phase. Previous reports from the Spanish National Heart Failure Registry (Registro Nacional de Insuficencia Cardiaca, RICA), which is a nationwide cohort-based prospective multicenter registry of 4,200 patients at 52 centers from March 2008 until April 2015, investigated BI's usefulness in patients with HF.…”

“…A total score of 100 indicates that the patient is independent of assistance from others [23]. In this study, we defined BADL disability as BI ≤60 points [24]. The Lawton IADL scale is an appropriate instrument used to assess independent living skills that are considered more complex than the BADLs (using the phone, shopping, preparing food, housekeeping, doing laundry, using transportation, handling medications, and handling finances) [25,26].…”
