Basal cell epithelioma (carcinoma) in children and teenagers

Abstract: Among over 390,000 routine dermatopathologic specimens there were 85 cases diagnosed as basal cell epithelioma (carcinoma) (BCE) in persons 19 years old or younger. This number was refined to 40 cases de novo BCE in children and teenagers. Basal cell epithelioma unrelated to other conditions is rare in the young and it should be differentiated from similar fibroepithelial growths.

“…This marked regional difference dramatically underscores the direct effects of UVB radiation and ethnicity on BCC's pathogenesis. Typically a neoplasm of the elderly 2 , BCC can arise in younger individuals living in sunnier latitudes, [9][10][11][12][13] and in those carrying genetic mutations that lead to albinism 14,15 , nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome 16 and xeroderma pigmentosum 17,18 . Alarmingly, another factor increasing BCC occurrence among younger individuals are highly preventable habits such as tanning bed use and smoking 19,20 .…”

“…10 In Italy, the incidence (1/256 000) 11 of the disease appears to be lower than in Australia (1/164 000) 12 and the United Kingdom. 10 Rahbari and Mehregan 13 noted that 2% of patients under 45 years of age with basal cell carcinomas have the syndrome. Recently two new studies reported the incidence of the syndrome in Korea, 14 and in France.…”
