Basal cell carcinomas of covered and unusual sites of the body

Abstract: Unusual location has been arbitrarily defined in the past according to the incidental percentage, to a mathematical index of density, to the literature reports. All these criteria suffer more or less from some discrepancy, but in our opinion all these should be considered for a definition. Our results, moreover, suggest that only the above described sites should be considered.

“…2 Typically, BCCs are commonly found on sun-exposed areas, and lesions on the face, neck, and scalp account for nearly 80% of all BCCs. 10 Perianal and genital BCCs are rather rare, and it is estimated that less than 1% of all BCCs 11,12 are found in these anatomic sites. The high frequency of PBCCs in the perianal and genital regions in these series and in our case report suggests that etiologies other than ultraviolet exposure from the sun may play a role.…”

“…However, it can potentially arise in the lower legs, genital and acral regions, as well as in nipples and buccal mucosa among others 32 . Characterized by being a slow-growing, locally aggressive neoplasm, metastasis in BCC is a rare occurrence and has been related to a variety of clinicopathologic factors such as younger age (mean of 45 years), male sex, head and neck location, positive history of prior treatment and large and deeply invasive tumors with lymphovascular invasion.…”

“…It occurs predominantly in men after the fourth decade of life with peak incidence at 6th decade [2]. It is exclusively seen on sun exposed sites such as face and neck (80-90%).…”

“…It is exclusively seen on sun exposed sites such as face and neck (80-90%). About one-third of BCC occur in non-sun exposed areas like axilla, groin, buttocks, nipple, breast, penis and scrotum [2]. It is derived from basaloid epithelia located in the follicular bulges, the anagen hair bulb, the follicular matrix cells and specific basaloid cells of the interfollicular epidermis [3].…”
