Barter trade improves message delivery in opportunistic networks

Abstract: In opportunistic networks, selfish nodes can exploit the services provided by other nodes by downloading messages that interest them, but refusing to store and distribute messages for the benefit of other nodes. We propose a mechanism to discourage selfish behavior based on the principles of barter. We develop a game-theoretic model in which we show that the proposed approach indeed stimulates cooperation of the nodes. The results show that, in practical scenarios, the message delivery rate considerably increa… Show more

“…The existing incentive strategies are traditionally classified into three categories [4,8]: barter-based [4,3,59], credit-based [8,43,63,37,62] and reputation-based [1,56,11,57,37,28]. In the following subsections, we will introduce the representative strategies in each category and summarize their common problems.…”

“…The simplest strategies are barter-based or pair-wise Tit-For-Tat (TFT) strategies [4,3,59]. The mechanism is that two encountering nodes exchange the same amount of messages.…”
