Abstract: Barsine vinhphucensis sp. nov. (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Arctiinae) has been discovered from mountain tropical forest of northern Vietnam. The new species differs from all the other members of the genus by a characteristic pattern and male genitalia structure. It appears to be a local endemic species of the Tam Dao Mountain Range.

“…Barsine Walker, 1854 is an exceptionally species-rich lichen moth genus, which mainly occurs in the Old World tropics, with the maximum level of species diversity in the Oriental Region, i.e. Malaysia and Greater Sunda Islands (Holloway 2001;Černý and Pinratana 2009;Bucsek 2012;Volynkin and Černý 2017aVolynkin and Černý , 2017bVolynkin 2018;Bayarsaikhan et al 2018;Spitsyn et al 2018a). However, this large genus in its current understanding seems to be a polyphyletic entity that contains representatives of several genus-level units.…”

“…Until recently, Barsine Walker, 1854 was considered to be a very large and polyphyletic genus including more than a hundred valid species (Holloway 2001;Kaleka 2003Kaleka , 2018Černý and Pinratana 2009;Bucsek 2012Bucsek , 2014Dubatolov et al 2012;Dubatolov and Bucsek 2013;Wu et al 2013;Singh 2015, 2016;Černý 2016;Volynkin and Černý 2016aVolynkin and Černý , b, c, 2017aVolynkin and Černý , b, c, d, 2018aVolynkin and Černý , b, 2019Bayarsaikhan et al 2018;Huang et al 2018Huang et al , 2019Joshi et al 2018;Spitsyn et al 2018;Volynkin 2018;Volynkin et al 2018Volynkin et al , 2019a. Volynkin et al (2019e) separated several lineages into distinct genera, and now Barsine includes 65 species and five subspecies of its type species, B. defecta Walker, 1854, having a basal saccular process.…”
