Barriers to the transition towards off-site construction in China: An Interpretive structural modeling approach

Abstract: Off-site construction (OSC) has been recognized as an approach to transform the construction sector from a labor-intensive to a modernized and green industry. Despite a number of advantages, the development of OSC still remains its infancy in China due to various interactive barriers. Some studies have been conducted to explore the barriers to the OSC adoption. However, very few studies attempted to investigate the complex interrelationships among these barriers. In order to fill this gap, this study adopts In… Show more

“…Another important reason is that there are relatively few real estate enterprises that are engaged in construction of prefabricated residential buildings, which leads to prefabricated residential buildings are in short supply, however meanwhile, discounts and promotion activities of traditional residences are drawing in more consumers. Second, there is a lack of knowledge for many consumers in understanding prefabricated residential buildings, which causes them to worry about the living convenience and quality of the prefabricated residential buildings to some extent [81]. Hypothesis H2 was verified based on the results, which means that the actual purchasing behaviors of consumers can positively affect the actual implementing behaviors of real estate enterprises.…”

“…To achieve the research purpose, this study employed a qualitative approach, i.e., interpretive structural modeling (ISM); the philosophical foundation for developing this application into complex situations as a communication tool was presented by Warfield [37]. ISM has been broadly utilized since its initiation, from the early literature on the policymaking [38][39][40][41], up to its wide use in recent managerial and developmental research [16,[42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49].…”

“…Inconsistencies among experts emerged when judging the dependence between the identified design barriers. Currently, there are two known principles for dealing with this phenomenon: the principle of "the minority gives way to the majority" [43,44] and the principle of "the error is within Sustainability 2020, 12, 2994 7 of 16 the allowable range" [45,46]. Since the error value in SSIM is not easy to calculate, the principle of "the minority gives way to the majority" was adopted here.…”
