Existing literature has shown that Virtual Reality (VR) is widely utilized in advanced economies to enhance sustainable construction practices. However, its adoption in developing economies remains limited. To this end, this study aims at exploring the potential benefits of implementing VR technology in a developing country. The study collected information on the beneficial aspects of VR from previous research and conducted questionnaire surveys to gather relevant insights from construction project experts in Nigeria. The collected data were analyzed using the Measurement of Alternatives and Ranking According to the Compromise Solution (MARCOS) method and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). The MARCOS method revealed that the key potential benefits of VR include improved communication and collaboration, enhanced project performance, risk identification, digitalization, and safety planning. Furthermore, the study conducted an in-depth investigation of the beneficial areas of VR using EFA, which identified six component groups: pre-contract stage planning, post-contract stage planning, quality control and sustainability, design flexibility and reputation, resource management, and risk management and digitalization. The study provides a comprehensive discussion of the advantages of implementing virtual building methods in developing countries.

The pervasive need for cloud-hosted application services has resulted from the widespread use of cloud data centers. Not only that, but there has been a dramatic increase in the resource demands of current applications, especially in data-intensive businesses. This has resulted in an increase in the number of cloud servers made available, which has increased energy usage and prompted environmental concerns. Only partially do the difficulties of scalability and adaptability in cloud resource management get addressed by conventional heuristics and reinforcement learning-based techniques. Many existing works overlook the interdependencies between host temperature, task resource usage, and scheduling decisions. Especially in contexts with fluctuating resource demands, this results in poor scalability and an upsurge in computing resource requirements. The study recommended a holistic resource management strategy based on resource scheduling for enduring cloud computing as a solution to these restrictions. Energy, thermal, and cooling models are all taken into account in the proposed model, which expresses the optimization of data center energy efficiency as a multi-objective scheduling issue. To generate optimal scheduling decisions and approximate the quality of service (QoS) for a given system state, the model employs cat-based swarm optimization as a surrogate model. Using the China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) framework, we conducted experiments that demonstrate cloud service orchestrator (CSO)’s superior performance compared to state-of-the-art baselines in terms of energy ingesting, makespan, and execution overhead in both simulated and real-world cloud environments.

PurposeThis paper presents the findings from the assessment of the determinants of cloud computing (CC) deployment by construction organisations. Using the technology-organisation-environment (TOE) framework, the study strives to improve construction organisations' project delivery and digital transformation by adopting beneficial technologies like CC.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a post-positivism philosophical stance using a deductive approach with a questionnaire administered to construction organisations in South Africa. The data gathered were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Also, the fusion of structural equation modelling (SEM) and machine learning (ML) regression models helped to gain a robust understanding of the key determinants of using CC.FindingsThe study found that the use of CC by construction organisations in South Africa is still slow. SEM indicated that this slow usage is influenced by six technology and environmental factors, namely (1) cost-effectiveness, (2) availability, (3) compatibility, (4) client demand, (5) competitors' pressure and (6) trust in cloud service providers. ML models developed affirmed that these variables have high predictive power. However, sensitivity analysis revealed that the availability of CC and CC's ancillary technologies and the pressure from competitors are the most important predictors of CC usage in construction organisations.Originality/valueThe paper offers a theoretical backdrop for future works on CC in construction, particularly in developing countries where such a study has not been explored.
