Barriers to and Facilitators of Engagement With Remote Measurement Technology for Managing Health: Systematic Review and Content Analysis of Findings

Abstract: BackgroundRemote measurement technology refers to the use of mobile health technology to track and measure change in health status in real time as part of a person’s everyday life. With accurate measurement, remote measurement technology offers the opportunity to augment health care by providing personalized, precise, and preemptive interventions that support insight into patterns of health-related behavior and self-management. However, for successful implementation, users need to be engaged in its use.Objecti… Show more

“…Results from this study are similar to those that emerged from a systematic review on barriers and facilitators to engagement with remote measurement technology [9]. However, our study focused more on the attitudes of people with depression towards technology, and the non-functional rather than functional factors.…”

“…The topic guide and coding frame built on a recent systematic review on barriers and facilitators to engagement with remote measurement technology [9]. Within the coding frame there were several pre-established major and minor codes and subthemes emerged beneath these codes following grounded-theory methods.…”

“…However, several evidence‐based BCTs are not integrated into Apps including action planning, coping planning, and instruction on performance of the behaviour . Because of these omissions and other patient barriers including dwindling motivation, wearables alone might be insufficient to produce long‐term PA engagement . The present trial included two group sessions to include these BCTs that are largely omitted from wearables and their associated Apps.…”

“…As such, many of these benefits have not yet been realized. 16,17 While factors affecting implementation of PT in routine health care have been reported from the perspective of health care professionals, organizations, and patients, [18][19][20][21][22][23] the implementation of PT in the clinical trial environment poses several unique challenges that merit additional research. Specific factors affecting PT adoption-including those associated with the complex and highly regulated clinical trial environment, cultural attributes of the pharmaceutical industry, the development of novel digital endpoints for clinical trials, and the management of site and patient experiences-have yet to be thoroughly explored.…”
