Barriers to and facilitators and perceptions of nut consumption among the general population in New Zealand

Abstract: Despite overall basic knowledge of the nutritional value of nuts, a substantial proportion of the general population was unaware of the cardioprotective effects of nuts. The present study identified common motivations for eating and avoiding nuts, as well as perceptions of nuts which could affect intake. These should guide the content and direction of public health messages to increase regular nut consumption. The public's knowledge gaps should also be addressed.

“…This problem is likely to be more prevalent among the elderly. A recent survey which examined barriers to and facilitators of nut consumption among the general public in New Zealand found that dental issues was the most frequently reported reason for the avoidance of nut consumption [ 91 ]. In addition, in a survey among health professionals (dietitians, general practitioners, practice nurses), dental issues were reported by around 14% of participants as a reason why they advise some of their patients to eat fewer nuts [ 92 ].…”

“…The lower proportion of 'nut consumers' in children could be due a range of factors including concerns regarding nut allergy and choking risk and schools or childcare centers prohibiting nuts and nut-containing products to reduce the risk of accidental exposure for young children with a nut allergy (30) . The literature has acknowledged the presence of nut allergy as reasons for low nut consumption (31) . It should be noted that current clinical guidance now recognises the importance of the early introduction of nuts for children at high risk of nut allergy (32) .…”

“…Nut intakes remain lower than recommended among our participants' environment. Understanding how the general population perceives nuts could inform strategies to promote regular nut consumption and increase intakes amongst the general public [5,6].…”
