Barrier effect of coal bottom ash-based geopolymers on soil contaminated by heavy metals

Abstract: Coal bottom ash (CBA) was modified on the basis of the engineering problems of low resource utilization of CBA and difficulty in treating HMS through alkali activation to synthesize geopolymers and solidify heavy metal-contaminated soil (HMS).

“…When the attraction becomes weaker, the energy required to remove the electron also reduces. One possible cause for the lower shifted binding energy value is the ability of OH – ions to coordinate with the Al or Si atoms on the surface of the alumino-silicate minerals and disrupt the arrangement …”

“…As shown in Figure 4(b), the Al 2p A peak which corresponds to Al 2 O 3 in alumino-silicates 37,38 shifted to a lower binding energy value from 74.38 eV of CFA-Raw to 74.28 eV of CFA-H 2 O, to 74.08 eV of CFA-NaOH 1 M, and to 73.58 eV of CFA-NaOH 3 M. Low intensity of the Al 2p B peak was detected in CFA-Raw (76.38 eV), which corresponds to AlO(OH). 37 The Al 2p B peak was not detected in CFA-H 2 O and detected in CFA-NaOH 1 M and CFA-NaOH 3 M with a binding energy of 71.68 eV for both cases, which corresponds to Al.…”

“…Buchwald proved the feasibility of the method by adjusting the concentration of ions to improve the chemical activity of the reaction products (Buchwald et al 2007). Studies have also been conducted on the treatment of wastewater and contaminated soil with active BA (Dong et al 2019), but their constituent treatment technologies still have shortcomings, such as high preparation cost (high calcination temperature requirements or expensive alkaline materials), unstable adsorption effect, poor mechanical properties, and so on (Bertolini et al 2004, Canpolat et al 2004, Wang 2008). These issues limit the use of these products in engineering.…”
