Baroreflex control of myocardial contractility in conscious normotensive and renal hypertensive rabbits.

Abstract: SUMMARY We have assessed resting myocardial contractility and its baroreflex control in normotensive and hypertensive conscious rabbits. Hypertension was induced by bilateral cellophane wrapping of the kidneys with experiments performed 6 weeks later during the established phase of hypertension. The peak rate of change of left ventricular pressure (peak LV dP/dt) was used as the index of myocardial contractility. Baroreflex control of contractility and heart period (HP) was assessed by constructing stimulus re… Show more

“…The mean arterial blood pressure in all animals was 82 ± 1 mm Hg (mean ± SE) and therefore similar to that reported for unanesthetized rabbits (Aylward et al, 1983). Arterial blood gases and pH were; P.02, 90 ± 1 mm Hg; P.co 2 , 31 ± 0.3 mm Hg; and pH, 7.494 ± 0.008.…”

“…Previous studies determining the baseline peak dp/dt indicated that this value was unaltered in isolated, artificially perfused hearts or in the in situ hearts from SHR 6 -7 and Goldblatt hypertensive rats, 5 -8 -9 while it was increased in anesthetized Page hypertensive rabbits 10 and dogs." Our study dealing with conscious intact animals also indicates the uncompromised resting peak dp/dt in the DOCA-salt hypertensive model.…”
