Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS): Validation in a Large Multisite College Sample

Abstract: Despite the importance of daily life executive functioning (EF) for college students’ success, few measures exist that have been validated in college students specifically. This study examined the factor structure of the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (BDEFS) in college students. Participants were 1,311 students (ages 18-28 years, 65% female) from five universities in the United States. Additionally, the study examined invariance across sex, age, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder sy… Show more

“…The executive function models that have been developed include those based on one executive central factor (Norman and Shallice, 1986;Barkley, 1997), as well as multiple factors (Gioia et al, 2002;García-Gómez, 2015;Ramírez et al, 2017;Kamradt et al, 2019), and have proposed the theoretical organization of these mental abilities. It is important to highlight that there are no conclusive results as yet, and, based on this description, the following two hypotheses are proposed, one based on a central executive factor and the other based on multiple factors: H 4 .…”

“…Executive function has measurable behavioral effects ( 34 ), and is linked to genetic ( 35 ), and neurobiological mechanisms ( 36 ). Neuropsychological measures of EF have been associated to activation of brain areas such as the frontoparietal ( 35 ) and frontal cortical areas ( 37 ), according to functional imaging studies.…”

“…ADHD, poor EF has also been found to negatively impact those without clinically significant disorders (e.g., Biederman et al, 2006). Recent studies have provided evidence that the scale can be used to assess non-clinical samples, using a Spanish-speaking community sample of college students and adults in Puerto Rico (V elez-Pastrana et al, 2016) and a large sample of college students across five universities in the U.S. (Kamradt et al, 2019).…”
