Barite-Free Muds for Drilling-in the Formations with Abnormally High Pressure

Abstract: This paper discusses problems associated with water-based drilling fluids used for drilling formations with abnormally high pressure. The available solutions are suitable for a narrow range of applications, especially when weighted muds should be used. This paper reviews the experience of searching and developing a new type of drilling mud based on saturated brines. With the referenced papers as the basis, the authors developed compositions of such brine-based drilling muds. A distinctive feature of the consid… Show more

“…The calcium chloride based HDBs are the best choice for such highpressure conditions, while sodium chloride-based HDBs are employed for less severe conditions and cost-effective operations. 149,150 The region-specific utilization of HDBs demonstrates their adaptability in addressing the demanding geological and operational issues encountered in different regions of the world. The selection of the HDBs is done on the basis of conditions encountered during the drilling operations to ensure safe and efficient commencement of the drilling and completion operation.…”

“…The main growth of the explored mineral resource base reserves is provided by such fields [14,15]. A wide range of research is focused on studying the oil's properties from such fields, as well as the conditions peculiarities of their development and prospecting [12,[16][17][18][19]. Many works show the accumulation of hydrocarbons in collector rocks, which are presumably the results of biodegradation.…”
