RESUMENEn este trabajo se presenta el índice de utilidad económica de Dolichotis patagonum (mara). Dicho índice será utilizado como marco de referencia en la evaluación de la evidencia arqueofaunística del consumo temprano de este roedor en la costa Norpatagónica. Se plantea una discusión acerca del potencial de esta especie como recurso alimenticio y se interpretan los recientes descubrimientos arqueológicos en el contexto de la subsitencia de los grupos cazadores-recolectores de la costa norte del golfo San Matías. De esta forma, la aplicación del índice presentado en este trabajo permitirá evaluar la representación de partes esqueletarias registradas en los diferentes sitios arqueológicos de está porción meridional de Sudamérica.PALABRAS CLAVE: Anatomía económica, Dolichotis patagonum, Norpatagonia, zooarqueología. This index can be used as a reference in the evaluation of early consumption of this rodent in archaeofaunal assemblages in the north coast of Patagonia. The potential of this species as a nutritious resource for the hunter-gatherer groups of the north cost of the gulf of San Matías, as well as the recent archaeological findings are discussed. In this context, the application of the index presented in this work permitted the evaluation of the representation of skeletal parts registered in the different archaeological sites in this portion of southern South America.

The application of modern methodological taphonomic approaches to Pleistocene faunal assemblages that were excavated and interpreted before taphonomic analyses became common are critical to verifying whether the original interpretations are valid. Even though taphonomic research is common in North America, Africa, and Europe, few such studies of faunal collections have been carried out in East Asia. In this regard, taphonomic analysis of the faunal assemblage from Hanaizumi, Japan serves as an excellent case study because few taphonomic re-analyses of previously excavated Pleistocene assemblages have been performed in Japan. Hanaizumi was excavated in the 1950s and the original behavioral interpretation was that hunter-gatherers were responsible for the accumulation of the faunal assemblage, which is dominated by bison (Bison priscus). The taphonomic analysis presented here indicates that evidence of human modification is present on the bones. However, results suggest that even though hunter-gatherers may have had primary access to many of the bison in the assemblage, Hanaizumi was probably not a kill site or a hunter-gatherer home base as was originally proposed. Rather, the acquisition of bison may have taken place further up river and Hanaizumi is the locality to which the already processed carcasses were transported via fluvial movement. Accordingly, it is difficult to use the Hanaizumi faunal dataset to address current paleoanthropological debates. Future fieldwork at the site may indicate that hunter-gatherers played a more significant role in the formation of the bison bone assemblage. For now, Hanaizumi is best considered an allochthonous paleontological collection that has assisted in paleoenvironmental reconstructions of Late Pleistocene Japan.

Evaluating the Contemporaneity of Households at the Eden‐Farson site

Archaeologists often rely on absolute dating methods, but the standard deviations associated with these approaches often leave us wondering what to make of spatially related archaeological units, such as adjacent sites, clusters of features or regional-scale investigations. This issue is particularly relevant to the Shoshone Protohistoric site of Eden-Farson located in southwest Wyoming. The campsite consists of at least 11 discrete excavation units and is associated with a successful communal game drive of over 156pronghorn. Yet the sheer number of pronghorn and the ambiguous nature of the near-surface cultural deposits have left researchers debating whether it represents a single occupation associated with a single successful game drive. Using a multivariate refit model, I have performed a bilateral refit analysis to identify links between the excavation units. Strong evidence for contemporaneity of Eden-Farson excavation units comes from 38 linkages between 10 of the 11 proveniences. Coeval occupation of the separate houses also allows for an analysis of food-sharing behaviours. With the last game drive occurring in the 1870s, the Eden-Farson site provides a rare opportunity to examine the social organisation of communal hunting.
