L’article s’intéresse à la problématique des liens de parrainage dans le milieu rural tchèque, à partir de l’exemple de la paroisse de Nový Rychnov. L’analyse s’appuie sur une base de données de 7 229 enfants nés dans la région étudiée au cours des années 1800-1899. L’étude du parrainage est utilisée comme un outil pour explorer les rapports sociaux et les changements de mentalité de la société rurale à l’époque de la modernisation. Un parrain et une marraine se présentaient habituellement aux baptêmes; ce n’est que dans la dernière décennie du xix e siècle que sont apparus les baptêmes avec un parrain unique. Les couples de parrain et marraine étaient d’habitude formés par des personnes en lien de parenté proche, le plus souvent des époux. L’observation du choix des parrains au sein des différentes familles a montré un parrainage se répétant régulièrement dans le cas des frères et sœurs. Un tiers des enfants environ étaient apparentés biologiquement avec au moins l’un des parrain et marraine, la tendance à une familialisation du parrainage devenant plus forte dans le courant du xix e siècle. Parmi les parrains (hommes) apparentés biologiquement, on voit apparaître une prédominance des parents matrilinéaires, le lien de parenté avec les marraines n’était pas si important. Le parrainage par des parents avait un rôle socialisant majeur dans le cas des enfants nés hors mariage.
