Bandwidth enhancement of a planar monopole microstrip patch antenna

Abstract: This paper presents a simple broadband planar monopole microstrip patch antenna with curved slot and partial ground plane. The proposed antenna is designed and fabricated on commercially available FR4 material with εr = 4.3 and 0.025 loss tangent. Bandwidth enhancement has been achieved by introducing a curved slot in the patch and optimizing the gap between the patch and the partial ground plane and the gap between the curved slot and the edge of the patch. Simulated peak gain of the proposed antenna is 4.8 d… Show more

“…This FCC approval in 2002 motivated researchers in both industrial and academic setups to design compact antennas for UWB applications. In the last few years, many new shapes has been proposed for UWB applications, such as semi‐circular slotted patch, curved slot in the patch, reconstructed ground plane . By simply adding a folded strip in the planar monopole antenna, dual UWB band characteristics have been reported .…”

“…A 5.2 GHz notched is achieved in UWB frequency range using a slot‐type split ring resonator . Bandwidth enhancement is achieved by the properly cut curved slot in the rectangular patch and by adjusting the pair of slits in the ground plane . UWB characteristics has been achieved by introducing circular disc patches in the antenna .…”

“…A fork‐shaped radiating patch in Reference , differentially fed partially cut elliptical patches in Reference , elliptical patch with circularly symmetric slot in References 3 and 4, open‐ended T‐shaped slot with feed line extension in Reference , double L‐slot patch in Reference , lobster‐shaped ground plane with multiple slots have been reported recently. The partial ground plane and slots impact the overall bandwidth of the antenna and its return loss characteristics. These effects have been analyzed for the proposed design.…”
